CMAA Sacred Music Colloquium XX: Video

Once again, the folks at Corpus Christi Watershed have put together a video on the CMAA Sacred Music Colloquium. Far from the hour long documentary "Sacred, Beautiful, & Universal," this video is a 6.5 minute glimpse into the week I spent in Pittsburgh, PA.

After mass this morning with Schubert's Mass In G with orchestra, I am checked out, waiting for the taxi and on my way home. Luckily, I've been able to get on an earlier flight so I can surprise my wife (Shhh... don't tell her). In your charity say a prayer that I might catch an even earlier one. See you in St. Louis (via Chicago or Baltimore first, depending on which flight I can get on).

What is Beauty? Pt. II

Before I begin, I want to apologize for my lack of blogging. The schedule is so greatly packed, that there has not been much time to write blog posts. Combine this with the lack of internet availability on the campus during the night hours, when I’m free to blog, and you have little to no posting. I also, apologize for the failure to post Fr. Kirby’s lectures. We are having some trouble getting around the file size issues.

Earlier this week, Dr. Mahrt, CMAA President, posed the question, “what is beauty?” While posing a possible answer to the question, he remarked:

“Thus beauty gives delight in the truth, and thus engenders a desire in the truth. And to desire it because it is good.”

The recorded lecture was given on Tuesday 6/22/2010 at the CMAA Sacred Music Colloquium XX as one of the afternoon breakouts. The lecture description reads:

“This session will approach the sacred liturgy as the wellspring and matrix of all theology and examine liturgical chant within this context as the sung theology of the church.”

“Beauty is the glue that holds truth and goodness together.”

In this evening’s lecture, titled, “What is Sacred Music?,” Dr. Mahrt began by speaking to us about beauty. In his remarks he posed the question, “What is beauty?” It’s a question that has been sitting with me throughout the course of the evening. After posing the question, Dr. Mahrt followed by saying:

St. Thomas calls beauty, ‘That which, when seen, pleases.’ It’s a rather surprising description, because it’s only just a description, it’s not a definition. It just describes what happens when you perceive beauty. And when you say, ‘that which, when seen pleases,’ it could be mistaken for simply sensible pleasures. Surely, that’s not what beauty is.

Tomorrow begins the CMAA Sacred Music Colloquium XX. My bags are almost completely packed. My flight leaves early in the morning.

Despite the difficulty of being away from Beth and James for the next week, I am terribly excited. I look forward to blogging and tweeting throughout the week to keep you up to date.

In your kindness, please take a moment to pray through the intercession of St. Christopher for safe travel for all the colloquium staff and participants traveling these next 24 hours.

"If Ye Love Me"

In less than one week, I'll be in Pittsburgh, PA, for the Church Music Association of America's Colloquium XX. It promises to be a week of musical heaven.

I received a partial list of music that I will be singing in the choirs I have signed up for. Included in this list is a lovely polyphonic piece by Thomas Tallis entitled, "If Ye Love Me."
